President Donald Trump took to Twitter to blast Democrats for their response to the Las Vegas shooting, calling their efforts to try to limit access to guns and ammunition a “witch hunt” and saying that the Democratic leadership had “lost the argument.”
Trump, who has said he would be open to allowing people to carry concealed guns if they pass a background check, called on the Democratic leader, Sen. Cory Booker, to resign over his decision to block the Senate Democrats’ proposal to expand background checks.
Booker, D-N.J., said on Tuesday that he had been instructed to stop the vote, arguing that it would violate his constituents’ Second Amendment rights.
The Senate bill would have allowed states to require that individuals undergoing mental health screenings undergo background checks for any firearm or ammunition they purchase.
Democrats, who control the Senate, have argued that it does not go far enough in protecting gun owners, but the White House has argued that such background checks would only be effective if they were implemented nationwide.
On Monday, Democrats also voted to block a proposal by Sen. Dick Durbin, D of Illinois, to extend a government-funded unemployment benefit to millions of unemployed workers.
Democrats are trying to push the bill through the Senate without a Democratic support, but some Republicans are concerned that Democrats would use the measure as leverage to get their agenda on the floor.
